A small collection of solid bronze pears, picked from an English garden and cast in bronze by the Pomarius studio. The trio here are finished with a warm dark patina, a nod to the dark colouring of the original fruit, and set with natural wax. The variety, Black Worcester or Parkinson’s Warden, is a small and very old cooking pear variety. Each work is a unique, solid bronze cast.
The pears are displayed on the 200x200mm marble plinth.
Alice Andrea Ewing studied History of Art at Cambridge University before training to cast in an atelier studio context. She works from her studio and foundry in the Suffolk countryside. She has exhibited internationally and her botanical design studio, Pomarius, is currently collaborating with Loewe for their 2021 jewellery collection.
Every work within a Pomarius collection is a unique bronze cast produced through an adaptation of the Italian or Renaissance Lost Wax process. Pomarius collections are the result of collaborations with gardens, historical locations and ancient trees around the UK. Led by artist Alice Andrea Ewing, produce from these sites has been cast in bronze and finished at her Suffolk studio and foundry. The resulting works are direct translations of the original organic specimens, capturing every detail and curiosity of form. Collections are seasonal and annual pieces are limited in number as a consequence.
The Green in Blythburgh was home to Sir Ernest Crofts, Keeper of the R.A., who had it re-modelled and extended around 1906 in the Arts & Crafts idiom. There is a disputed connection to the architect Frank Jennings, responsible for many of the famous Arts & Crafts properties in the coastal village of Walberswick within the same area. The property and its sister property, The Priory, sit on the ruins of the 12th century Augustinian priory, the flint ruins of which remain visible in the gardens of both houses. In 2008, the house was given an Arts & Crafts garden complete with a working kitchen garden and orchard.
