LINLEY goes to town with the Metropolitan Collection

Following on from the success of the strikingly modern Helix Collection, LINLEY has looked to the urban landscape for inspiration in designing a new furniture collection, specifically designed for city living with an equally contemporary feel. Appropriately christened, the Metropolitan Collection brings something new to the table whilst maintaining the traditions of detailed design and excellent craftsmanship.

The Metropolitan Collection is executed in dark stained American walnut, a wood famed for its strength and shine, with eight pieces of linear slip-matched marble Macassar. In addition to this, the dark stain of the walnut compliments the sophisticated streamlined geometric design.

The collection comprises a side table, console table, dining table and coffee table all characterised by the same sharp and clean lines. The low table, side table and dining table are distinguished by bold silhouettes and a wide stance which lends them a natural presence for both a city office and a penthouse apartment. The console table, although much narrower, is supported on two dark stained impactful slab legs. LINLEY's famous use of illusion is evident in the chamfered table tops and shadow gaps which allow the tables to "float". LINLEY furniture is designed not only to endure the test of time but also to look good - every single piece is distinctive, with a unique patina of wood and attention to detail. Both sleek and practical the Metropolitan Collection champions urban living with elegance and style.

LINLEY and The Antique Wine Company create the ultimate collector's case of vintages

An exceptional collection of first growth wines encased in an elegant, hand-crafted box.

The Antique Wine Company and British design house Linley are furthering their collaboration to create the ultimate collector's item - an exquisite selection of five first growths housed in a beautifully crafted wine box created in Santos rosewood with Indian rosewood, ebony and satinwood inlay.

The predominant feature of the wine box is the intertwined twin strands of the double helix, or the unit cell of DNA in marquetry inlay. This motif characterises the iconic Linley Helix furniture collection, and is also featured in the recently launched Linley for Bentley Continental Flying Spur, for which Linley has designed the interior.

The motif itself is made up of four different types of veneer that contrast with the Santos rosewood. These have been applied using the technique of marquetry inlay, the meticulous discipline whereby veneers are cut to a design - either by hand or by laser depending on the levels of intricacy - and pieced together to form a pattern before being applied to a solid base, in this instance to depict the double helix.

Marquetry in its crude form was introduced over 3000 years ago by the Egyptians and indeed adorns the tomb of Tutakhamun. The technique has been refined substantially over the ensuing years and in particular in recent years with the introduction of laser technology to allow precision cutting and minute detailing.

David Linley comments: ""The intricate marquetry detailing on the box we have created with the Antique Wine Company epitomises fine craftsmanship at its best, and therefore is a be-fitting home for wines that are themselves feats of artisan skill and perfectionism. This latest venture marks an exciting new chapter in the LINLEY / AWC partnership."

An adjunct to the distinctive Helix collection, the wine box will house five of the finest bottles of Bordeaux selected by renowned wine merchants The Antique Wine Company, who specialise in supplying remarkable wines to many of the worlds most sophisticated wine buyers.

The selection includes: Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2003 - one of the most prestigious wines of the vintage and according to Robert Parker, a modern clone of the 1959. It represents a ripe version of the essence of Lafite-Rothschild.

Chateau Latour 1982 is "Flamboyant, concentrated and opulent" - some of the words used by wine critics to describe it. Antique Wine's Managing Director Stephen Williams, commented: "Whilst the 82 Latour is magnificent to enjoy today, its massive structure will last for another 50 or more years".

Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1986 - one of the most profound wines of the vintage, rated 100 points, is almost port like in style and considered one of the greatest achievements of this chateau's first growths.

Chateau Margaux 2000 - Legendary Margaux winemaker, Paul Pontallier, commented that this wine was the most tannic and concentrated - made for the last 40 years. However the freshness and ripe tannins create a great balance between modern day wine-making and traditionally-styled Bordeaux.

Chateau Haut Brion 1989 - Robert Parker describes this wine as "One of the immortal wines and one of the greatest young Bordeaux wines of the last half-century." Haut Brion is one of the most consistent Chateau in all of Bordeaux and in 1989 their wine outshone all others.

Fifty of the beautiful Santos rosewood boxes will be produced, each featuring a commemorative numbered plaque and co-branded Linley / Antique Wine Company. The exquisite design would be impossible to replicate, due to the superb craftsmanship applied at the Linley workshop.

The wine collection is displayed through a toughened glass top with a polished nickel stringing around the frame. A luxurious suede lines the interior of the box, which also features a removable stand with cut-out intersections that hold each bottle securely in place. Each box can be used as both a beautiful decorative item in its own right, which could be multi-functional, or refilled with replacement vintages on an on-going basis.

LINLEY's flagship London store at 60 Pimlico Road reopens following an exciting refurbishment, with a event attended by 50 leading journalists which also saw the official launch of our new brand identity.

As 2012 approaches, LINLEY is moving into the next exciting stage of brand development and strategic expansion under the new leadership of Jamie Edmiston.

As a shareholder of Linley, Jamie Edmiston will work closely with Chairman David Linley to take the LINLEY brand into the international arena.

The essence and values of the brand will remain consistent, drawing on Linley’s expertise and skills of craftsmanship and design. Strategic initiatives in the first stages of restructuring will include:

Redeveloped brand identity reflecting the bold, contemporary direction the company is now taking

Refurbishment and relaunch of the LINLEY flagship store on Pimlico Road, Belgravia

The launch of the LINLEY Bentley collaboration - a limited edition of 10 Continental Flying Spurs.

Unveiling of a business plan outlining strategic initiatives, global expansion plan and product development focus

Jamie Edmiston quotes: “LINLEY craftsmanship and the quality of work is without question world class – the attention to detail and the passion that goes into each product is a clear differentiator, and the passion that David has for design and craftsmanship still rings clearly throughout the company. This quality of workmanship, combined with the provenance of the LINLEY name has ensured that the brand is extremely well respected and recognised – there is no doubt that LINLEY is one of the great British brands – however, I firmly believe there is enormous potential to grow the brand both in the UK and internationally. I have huge respect and admiration for brands such as Louis Vuitton and Hermes, and my clear aim is to ensure that the LINLEY brand is recognised in the same vein as these within the next five years. I am of course realistic and don’t expect this to happen overnight, however, I am a firm believer that we should aim high”.

Bentley links with Linley

LINLEY is delighted to announce a unique collaboration with Bentley Motors for the creation of a limited edition of 10 Continental Flying Spurs.

The limited edition CFS models will be sold in China, reflecting continuing demand by Bentley’s biggest four-door market. They will incorporate signature Linley elements designed to appeal to customers who value pedigree and lineage, handcrafted quality and peerless design.

Specially selected Linley veneers in Santos rosewood are being applied to the fascia, consol, waistrail and roof console and integrated within the cars for the first time. The veneers cover the entire wood surfaces of the model, where Bentley chestnut or walnut would normally be used.

David Linley, Chairman of Linley, comments: “It is a great honour to be working alongside such an esteemed British brand as Bentley. Our two brands share a commitment to superlative craftsmanship and design. I believe that the culmination of our efforts will result in a car that is utterly unique and reflective of the passion that both brands share for pushing boundaries of engineering and excellence.”

The iconic Linley Helix motif has been taken from the distinctive Linley Helix Furniture Collection and is being set, using the highly specialised skill of marquetry inlay, into the waist-rails and picnic table of the Flying Spurs. The Helix pattern is made up of four different types of veneer which contrast with the Santos rosewood to show the wave effect delivered by the marquetry.

In addition, the rear console is being modified for a customer-commissioned Linley humidor.

Brett Boydell, senior designer at Bentley, says: “A special box has been designed by Linley which drops into a unique console. We have reconfigured the console so that the box can fit in, moving things around and creating a space. It was an engineering feat to meet the quality requirements of a Bentley and the design cues of Linley.”

The project has been worked on by Mark Blanchard, Head of Design at Linley, who comments: “It has been an exciting and challenging project to work on. We designed the interior within the stringent constraints specified by Bentley, however we ensured the car exemplified Linley craftsmanship.

“The car had to look different and we wanted a strong statement inside the interior, so we chose Santos rosewood, a straight grain veneer. Bentley usually uses burr veneers for their interiors as they are more malleable around compound curves. Using a straight grain veneer was a new challenge but together we succeeded and the final results look stunning.”

Stainless steel Linley treadplates will feature on the cars, as will a Linley for Bentley rhodium-plated plaque in the glove box. Modified fluting on the seats will feature burnt oak contrast stitching, with additional burnt oak hide accentuating the storage areas and door pockets.

A Linley branded leather bag with a sumptuous cashmere blanket and other Linley items such as a leather luggage tag will be included in the boot of the limited edition Flying Spurs.

In working with Blanchard, Boydell ensured that all Bentley automotive quality processes were integrated with the design work.

There were several design challenges, says Boydell. “For instance, the marquetry of the Helix pattern had to be combined with the manufacturing standards and processes which we adhere to in the automotive industry.

“The collaboration is a ringing endorsement of two great British brands working closely together. We have achieved a very high-class product which has the recognisable signs of Linley entwined into a Bentley. We are offering customers the chance to own a highly customised piece of British heritage.

“I hope the collaboration will be a springboard for future projects.”

Notes to Editors

Bentley Motors is the third largest R&D investor in the UK's automotive sector and the 18th largest nationally. The company employs almost 4,000 people in Crewe which is home to all its operations including design, R&D, engineering and production. The combination of fine craftsmanship, using skills that have been handed down through generations, alongside engineering expertise and cutting-edge technology is unique to UK luxury vehicle manufacturers such as Bentley. It is also an example of high-value British manufacturing at its best. Bentley exports over £500m worth of goods every year to established markets like the US, as well as emerging markets such as China and South America.

Bentley recently announced its global sales for the first half of 2011. Sales were up by 20% to 2,978 the best start to a year by Bentley since 2008. The surge in sales has been led by demand for Bentley’s newly launched Continental GT as well as the all-new Mulsanne. The growing popularity of the brand in China, where sales have increased by 57% to become Bentley’s second largest – but fastest growing – market has been instrumental in this improved performance. However, traditional markets such as Europe and the Americas have also performed strongly, up by 25% and 23% respectively and increasing market share.

About Linley

David Linley founded his eponymous business in 1985 with the aim of designing and manufacturing furniture of the highest quality. Some 25 years on, the now well established British design company Linley enjoys international prominence as both a retail and bespoke business specialising in the design and production of furniture, upholstery and accessories of a superlative quality. The company also offers a fully comprehensive interior design service.

Linley has become known for its imaginative use of wood in the design of furniture, using a balance of traditional and modern techniques to achieve the best possible result whether for an individual piece or an entire room. Woods used range from the more traditional walnut and sycamore to bold and exotic Macassar ebony. The company, which has grown to epitomise quintessential British style, has developed expertise in working in a variety of disciplines and is skilled in the use of metal work, glass, leather and other materials used in interior design projects.

Linley’s products are currently sold through two London shops (Linley Belgravia and Linley Mayfair). Gifts and accessories are also sold through the website www.davidlinley.com and from the Linley shop at Harrods 2nd Floor, Brompton Road, London SW1.

David Linley

David's creative ability was nurtured by his parents, Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, from an early age as they encouraged his passion for making things. His father, an eminent photographer, was particularly influential, having himself trained as an architect and designed among other things the Aviary at London Zoo. David attended Bedales School, an alternative school which emphasises arts and crafts, where he developed an avid interest in wood-working, honing his professional skills at a specially designated School for Craftsmen in Wood.

David has written four books and has lectured around the world at prestigious venues such as the V&A Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2006, David took up the position of Chairman of Christie's UK, in addition to his role as Chairman of Linley.
When I was a small boy, my grandmother challenged me to find a secret drawer in a bureau which she treasured. I still remember the exhilaration when I eventually found it. I couldn’t understand how it was possible to conceal something so cleverly, so resolved to find out how. This was really when my interest in wood-working began.

A piece of furniture or objet d’art should be something we connect with emotionally and physically. It is not just a static object to be admired. At LINLEY we are experimental, innovative and strive for excellence. We do not set out to tow the line, but rather to push the boundaries, creating idiosyncratic items that will be treasured for a lifetime and indeed generations to come.

Throughout this year we celebrate a quarter of a century since the founding of LINLEY, and I am delighted that we are once again exhibiting at Masterpiece London, 30th June – 5th July at Chelsea Barracks, just around the corner from our Pimlico Road shop.

Representing an inter-disciplinary fusion of traditional and modern, old and new, Masterpiece brings together not only the finest of decorative arts, but also the best of wines, classic cars, jewellery, furniture and contemporary design.

I very much look forward to welcoming you at Masterpiece, or to our Belgravia, Mayfair or Harrods shops this summer.

LINLEY’s World Vision

Using the refined technique of marquetry inlay, LINLEY has created a map of the world using 29 different veneers. Some of these veneers have been chosen specifically to represent the country from which they originate. For example Great Britain is depicted using English burr oak, Spain by Spanish cedar, Australia by eucalyptus burr and Switzerland by Swiss pear. The varied and diverse veneers used for the rest of the world range from lacewood, to amboyna, ripple sycamore, Tamo ash and rosewood. This combination displays the immense beauty and diversity of timbers from across the world, and in turn symbolises global cultural diversity.

The oceanic expanses are featured in burr ash, whilst a nautical compass, the Equator, the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer are shown in a combination of Macassar ebony and mother of pearl.

Marquetry is the technique whereby different veneers are used to create a design or picture, rather like a jigsaw puzzle. Paper thin veneers are cut to a design and pieced together before being applied to a solid base - a labour intensive and meticulous discipline that requires the utmost skills of craftsmanship, a characteristic for which Linley is known.

LINLEY has a Butterfly Ball

British design company LINLEY has created a unique ‘piece de resistance’ which will be unveiled and showcased at the Masterpiece London Fair, launching 29th June 2011 – the Butterfly Ball Table.

This striking piece is a result of esteemed cabinet-makers and designers LINLEY teaming with natural artist Nick Jeffrey.

Known for his pioneering work using natural objects and resin, Nick has collaborated with LINLEY to create a table top art installation which features real butterflies dancing across the surface. These are carefully positioned within a resin cast set into a unique and distinctive LINLEY table. The overall silhouette has been designed by LINLEY to echo the shape of a flower in bloom – the ideal medium for a butterfly ball.

With an elegant piano finish, the table has been intricately crafted from walnut and inlaid with Macassar ebony. Striking nickel detailing and cock beading define and accentuate the piece. The top sits upon four elegantly curved legs on a pedestal base, the overall form resembling that of a tulip or crocus flower exploding into a burst of colour.

Real butterflies from sustainable farmed sources have been used. These are carefully positioned and set into clear resin floating above a mirrored surface, thus exposing both sides of their delicate and exuberantly colourful wings.

A one off piece, the Butterfly Ball Table provides a rare collecting opportunity for lovers of fine craftsmanship and natural art alike.

Makers and designers of fine furniture LINLEY have established their reputation making furniture and collectable items of exquisite quality and craftsmanship. Their items have been hailed the ‘heirlooms of tomorrow’.

Nick Jeffrey has become known for his pioneering work in natural art, celebrating the beauty of nature by fusing raw and modern materials to dramatic effect.

LINLEY & LALIQUE: Combined expertise and superlative craftsmanship result in a unique collecting opportunity

‘MASQUE DE FEMME’ & ‘PERLES’ JEWELLERY BOXES from LALIQUE by LINLEY – LIMITED EDITION – 99 pieces

British design company LINLEY and French ‘sculpteurs de lumière’ LALIQUE have joined forces to create a unique, limited edition collection of jewellery boxes launching in both LINLEY and LALIQUE stores this spring. The boxes will also be available from LINLEY at Harrods. Marking the first collaboration between the two brands, the boxes epitomise the expertise of both: the fine work of LALIQUE crystal combined with LINLEY signature precious woods utilising the techniques of marquetry and inlay.

Founded by David Linley in 1985, LINLEY creates bespoke furniture, collectable pieces and luxury gifts and accessories that showcase the finest British design and craftsmanship. Lalique has become known for creating beautiful and innovative crystal sculptures which are inspired by natural forms.

The synergistic values and objectives of LINLEY and LALIQUE result in a collection which fulfils the exacting requirements of both brands in manufacturing and design. The pieces exude beauty and intricacy and are testaments to fine craftsmanship.

There are two boxes in the collection – The ‘Masque de Femme’ Jewellery Box & the ‘Perles’ Jewellery Box:

Made in Macassar ebony covered with vellum, the ‘Masque de Femme’ Jewellery Box is embellished with the iconic LALIQUE Masque de Femme motif, originally created by René Lalique in 1935 to adorn a fountain. It reveals the face of an enigmatic woman with delicate features surrounded by aquatic fauna. Twenty flower shaped crystals echo the beauty of this inlaid panel which is symbolic of the imaginative vision of its creator, who drew inspiration from both feminine and natural forms.

The ‘Perles’ Jewellery Box contrasts the smooth satin-finish of LALIQUE crystal with the high gloss ebonised maple wood signature of LINLEY.

The manufacturing of each of these exceptional boxes is an elaborate process, requiring a minimum of three weeks. The crystal is fashioned in France, at the factory of Wingen sur Moder and then sent to England to finalize the assembly by hand.

THE ART DECO COLLECTION - LINLEY streamlines into 2011

The Art Deco collection comprises a dining table and console both executed in Dark stained walnut and Macassar Ebony. Circumnavigating the rim of the table and console is polished nickel beading and this is supported by a gentle flared ‘U’ shape leg on a chamfered base with nickel reading.

The elegance of the French designer Emile-Jacque Ruhlmann’s (1879 - 1933) work, in particular, lent inspiration to this refined collection. The designers of the 20th Century formed a very individual movement; pieces were designed as objects of fine art and functionality. Modern materials like nickel and chrome were incorporated into the designs which became more geometric and streamlined. Ruhlman’s work was exclusive and distinguished by its elegance, reacting against the concept of designing for the mass market. Similar to Linley, Rulhman stressed the importance of the work of skilled craftspeople, employing those highly trained in selective fields including veneering, inlaying and carpentry, and as a result creating high quality furniture enhanced by form and design.

Maintaining this vision of exemplary craftsmanship and incorporating modern techniques and materials, LINLEY furniture is designed to endure the test of time and, in doing so, transports the Art Deco movement into the 21st Century.

David Linley will be signing copies of his new book Star Pieces at Linley at Harrods (2nd Floor, Gifts & Objet room), 3pm on Wednesday 8th December.

"Star Pieces is a celebration of spectacular furniture from throughout the ages and today. I was lucky enough to work with two great connoisseurs - Charles Cator and Helen Chislett -to bring together this substantial work. I hope it will inspire and delight people who, like me, share a passion for beautiful things" - David Linley

In this stunning coffee table book, David Linley discusses his own passion for furniture, with particular reference to the 'Star Pieces' that have inspired the title of his latest book. He reveals that 'Stars' are a feature of many historical periods and come from all parts of the globe, and explores how designs from centuries past often link directly to the very contemporary and challenging work of makers today. We are on the threshold of a new golden age of furniture - something to celebrate - and this book informs people not only how to spot a 'Star', but also explains the importance of contemporary craftsmanship and design.

In Celebration of The Star of the Battle of Britain

This year celebrates the 70th Anniversary of The Battle of Britain that took place over July-September 1940. Undoubtedly the star of this legendary and event changing conflict was R.J. Mitchell’s Spitfire which has gone down in history as being the unrivalled symbol of defiance.

I was thrilled therefore to come across Huw Edwards Jones’ memorial piece, a sculpture/table made from both original spitfire components with others following the original blueprint specifications, as a fitting memorial to RJ Mitchell, Wing Commander Bob Doe, DSO, DFC & Bar (the third highest scoring Battle of Britain ‘Ace’) and to quote Churchill, “The Few”.

Designed and produced by Huw himself, who incidentally is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers and who has been awarded five separate Guild Marks to date, the sculpture/table will seat up to 16 people and will be accompanied by provenance in the form of copies of notes to Huw about the piece from both Gordon Mitchell (son of R.J. Mitchell) and Bob Doe himself.

Huw is currently seeking a commission for the piece and I urge you to take a look at his website.

I wish Huw every success with this special project and look forward to seeing the piece once finished.

The box features carved Corinthian columns and mouldings, and a secret hiding place for the key within the framework of the roof – a true demonstration of precision and craftsmanship.

The main roof of the building lifts to reveal compartments for storing precious jewels. Hidden within is an additional secret storage space for particularly special pieces, a fitting purpose for a box inspired by of one the greatest treasure troves of artefacts in the world.

Marble Drum Table

Out of this world and of this world: The Marble Drum Table from LINLEY

British design company LINLEY introduces The Blue Marble Drum Table which combines the principles and proportions of neo-classically inspired furniture with blue ‘Sodalite’ marble, gilding and bronze.

The result is a table which exudes classical style but which has an ethereal elegance evoking the beauty and mysticism of the solar system: - when viewed from above the patina of the marble surface evokes a satellite shot of the Earth. Furthermore, surrounding the marble are nine circular inlays of Macassar ebony with satinwood stringing, symbolizing the nine solar planets.

Blue ‘Sodalite’ marble is the bluest and most exclusive of all granite and marble composites, and is found high in the Andes range. The stone is said to have special spiritual characteristics, prized by some for its meditative qualities and is purported to have a ‘grounding’ influence with an energy that is quiet, calm and deep. Mountain

In this instance both its aesthetic – and possibly spiritual - qualities have been honed through skilful stonecutting and intricate craftsmanship to create a unique piece of furniture. Not only does it exude ‘other-worldliness’ from a spiritual perspective – and indeed the world from a visual perspective - but the marble that forms the core of the table is taken from mines deep inside the earth, giving it genuine worldly gravitas.

The LINLEY Marble Drum Table is designed for a spacious entrance hall as a dramatic occasional or centre piece. The frame of the table is constructed in walnut with inlays of satinwood and ebony and slip-matched Macassar ebony banding, surmounted by the blue Sodalite marble. Three tapered legs feature gilt gold leaf capitals and flutes finished with brass feet, linked by a scalloped stretcher. Other details include three smaller squares of the marble on the ‘apron’ of the table, which is garnished with brass cock-beading, gilded flutes and bronze beading.

Monte Carlo Desk

An Architectural Desk inspired by the Monte Carlo Casino

British design company LINLEY has created a desk which pays homage to one of Monaco’s most notable landmarks – the Monte Carlo Casino. The writing desk features this distinctive building as its central gallery, with stylised archways on either side. It has been created by Linley as a one off piece, epitomizing the intricacy and precision of fine craftsmanship at its best.

The main body of the desk is constructed in American walnut with inlays of Santos rosewood and sycamore, whilst the surface of the desk is covered in dark red leather. The façade of the architectural box bears marquetry detailing in various veneers representing the windows, columns, galleries and balusters of the casino. On the underside of the domed lid of the architectural box is a marquetry depiction of the Monagesque flag in red sycamore and holly. Six hand-carved figurines surmount the rooftop.

Reminding us of its inspiration, the desk features special references to the activities of the casino and its history. These include a marquetry depiction of playing cards and die as well as a laser etched portrait of its founder, Charles III of Monaco. Adding an element of surprise, over six secret drawers are hidden within, each one released by a different mechanism; ideal for hiding the winnings!

The casino, built by the architect Charles Gariner, was founded by Charles III of Monaco and opened in 1856. It stands to this day, resplendent in the main square of Monte Carlo, an evocation of the glamour and excitement of Monaco. The desk is a fitting tribute to an iconic building, and in its own right is a collectable work of art – not a trick to miss!

Pont du Gard Side Tables

LINLEY bridges the gap with a beautiful, one off pair of side tables…

British design company LINLEY introduces a unique pair of side tables named after the ‘Pont du Gard’. The style of this one off pair draws inspiration from the elegance and fine detailing of ‘Sheraton’ furniture of the late 18th century. Its embellishment refers to the architectural beauty of the Roman Empire’s Pont du Grad aqueduct, which stands to this day in Provence.

The main frame of each side table is constructed in American walnut with a slip-matched Santos rosewood surface and lower shelf. Sycamore and nickel plated stringing add definition and texture.

The graceful silhouette of the side tables evokes the refined form of Sheraton’s pieces but stream-lined and simplified in a contemporary manner. The tapered legs with nickel plated feet give an overall impression of delicacy and elegance. The marquetry decoration depicting the magnificent bridge is not only visually beautiful but, like Sheraton’s work, conveys a positive appreciation of the beauty of wood, with contrasting veneers, fine stringing and geometric patterns depicting the famous aqueduct.

The Pont du Gard Bridge, a world heritage site and one of France’s most notable landmarks is a triumphant reminder of skill and craftsmanship. The aqueduct, carrying 35 cubic meters of water daily, enabled the town of Nimes to flourish with fountains, spas, sophisticated plumbing networks and monuments. It is constructed on three levels, carrying a road and a water channel and took fifteen years to build. Echoing this superlative craftsmanship LINLEY has beautifully portrayed the bridge contouring the table using laser cut marquetry of walnut, Santos rosewood and sycamore.

The Pont du Gard Side Tables have been designed to stand alone as a beautiful yet functional addition to any room and, just like the hidden caves and ancient Roman grottos surrounding the Pont du Gard, LINLEY has added an element of surprise; hidden within the marquetry arches is a secret door concealing the perfect hiding place for your most precious artefacts.

Pagoda Screen

Star of Stage and Screen – The LINLEY ‘Pagoda Screen’

LINLEY introduces the Pagoda Screen which takes its inspiration from the exotic and distinctive Chinoiserie bed at Badminton House.

The bed, commissioned by the 4th Duke and Duchess of Beaufort for the Chinese bedroom, was designed and made by John Linnell and his father William Linnell for Badminton House in 1754 and in turn takes its inspiration from the architecture of Chinese pagodas.

LINLEY has drawn on the design of the fretted backboard of the bed to create the four panels of the screen. This Chinoiserie style, similar to that of garden tea pavilions found in large gardens throughout Britain and Europe from circa 1730, was particularly popular for ladies’ bedrooms and dressing rooms. Echoing this, mirrors have been added to the top of each panel on the LINLEY screen. These serve a practical purpose in a dressing room, but equally their addition reflects and enhances the light in a room.

The fretwork of the screen has been created using marquetry inlay of dark Macassar ebony and ripple sycamore. To add depth and give the illusion of 3D pattern, different shades of ripple sycamore and ebony have been used. The screen is made up of four panels, with slotted nickel butt hinges allowing the panels to be disassembled easily. The intricate marquetry and mirrored panels are repeated on both sides of the screen ensuring that wherever the screen is placed the pattern remains in view.

The Pagoda Screen is both adaptable and functional, but equally beautiful; an ideal way to sub-divide open plan space in a non- intrusive way.

The imagery runs continuously around the box.

Linley artwork to be major feature on Cunard's New Queen Elizabeth

Cunard ships, while among the most modern afloat, are known for their traditional luxury, accentuated by extensive use of brass, classic fabrics, marble and highly polished woods and veneers.

So the interior of Cunard's new Queen Elizabeth posed a particular challenge for designers deciding how to treat the significant central arched space on the sweeping staircase leading up from the main deck in the ship’s soaring Grand Lobby, the first area to greet embarking passengers. Cunard's President and Managing Director, Peter Shanks, says: "We needed to fill that space with a decorative screen which would not just be dramatic, a wow factor in an area already full of wow, but which would also reflect our emphasis on traditional and sumptuous materials. After much thought and exploratory work, it was decided to commission a 5.6-metre (18 ft 6 in) high marquetry panel depicting the original Queen Elizabeth, an Art Deco icon, using a variety of natural woods from around the world. Once we had decided on the theme and the medium, it didn't take us long to conclude that no-one was better qualified for this detailed but monumental work than the company of the exceptional craftsman David Linley, whose creative ability and mastery of wood is renowned."

As a result, Linley, a company specialising in the design and manufacture of fine furniture and marquetry was commissioned to design and make this stunning centrepiece at the heart of the ship. Work is currently under way, and the completed panel will be shipped during the summer to the Fincantieri shipyard at Monfalcone, Italy, where it will be installed over a period of four days to take pride of place just before the ship enters service in October. The magnificent artwork shows the port bow of the original Queen Elizabeth seen dramatically from sea level, and is intricately executed using the technique of marquetry inlay in nine different types of wood veneers. Spanning 2 decks, the panel is made up of nine panels seamlessly jointed to lightweight board. The marquetry panel features Madrona, Indian ebony, American walnut, grey ripple sycamore, burr ash, bird's eye maple, satin walnut , ash, burr walnut and Macassar ebony; all used to depict the evocative image of Queen Elizabeth.

Commenting on the challenges faced by the bespoke commission, Linley’s Chairman, David Linley, who founded the company in 1985, says:

"Though we have made fittings for luxury yachts in the past, this is the first sea-going work we have done on this scale; it is certainly the largest screen we have ever made; but it was a commission I was delighted to accept. I recall my father saying the interior design on Cunard's Queen Elizabeth 2 made one proud to be British, so I am hoping our achievement on the new Queen Elizabeth will make him, and others, equally proud". Queen Elizabeth will be the second largest Cunarder ever built and will join her sisters Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria as part of the youngest fleet in the world. She will feature many unique Cunard traditions linking her with her sisters and their predecessors, together with all the modern day luxuries Cunard's passengers have come to expect. There will also be features that will give the vessel her own style and personality.

The first Queen Elizabeth was one of Cunard's greatest ships, and the new Queen Elizabeth will reflect her predecessor in interior grandeur, decor and style, but with a modern twist. From the outside, her distinctive black and red livery will hint at an experience that differentiates a Cunard liner from a modern-day cruise ship. This will be most evident in the ship's adherence to liner traditions, with elegant double and triple height public rooms on a grand scale, luxuriously endowed with rich wood panelling, intricate mosaics, hand-woven carpets, gleaming chandeliers, and cool marbles. Art Deco features will pay homage to the original Queen Elizabeth, and will allow the new ship to reflect a more civilized era of travel. Queen Elizabeth will depart on her Maiden Voyage on Tuesday 12 October 2010. This 13-night celebration will leave from the company's home port, Southampton, and will call at Vigo, Lisbon, Cadiz, Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife (overnight call) and Funchal.

Secret Drawers and Hidden Compartments

Secret Drawers and Hidden Compartments

Before the invention of safes, it was common practice to hide valuable possessions and important papers in the secret drawers and compartments within furniture such as chests, bureaus, desks and cabinets.

As the latest technique for creating a hiding place quickly became known, numerous and ingenious ways were invented to trick a potential thief. In furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries, one can often find a hidden drawer behind an obvious one, or beneath an ink-well; not infrequently a box has a false bottom. Hiding-places were often contrived behind the pigeon-holes or drawers of cabinets; the pilasters dividing these pigeon-holes were sometimes hollow, forming slender concealments for papers. In many cases a secret spring had to be touched before the cavity was revealed.

The Finsbury desk drawers conceal hidden compartments.

A wonderful example of a piece of furniture with such secret drawers and compartments is The Bureau du Roi at the royal palace of Versailles ? one of the most expensive pieces of furniture ever made. One of its more ingenious mechanism's was to allow the housemaid to open the drawers containing the ink-wells from the side to replenish them, when the front of the desk was still locked!

Concealed behind the window of Villa Cornaro Jewellery Box is a hidden drawer.

The creation of secret drawers within furniture has been a source of interest and delight for David Linley from the beginning of his career as a cabinet maker. This passion was sparked by David's father once challenging him to find a secret draw... and he succeeded but only after a very long and determined search!

"The inclusion of a secret drawer or compartment allows a person to interact with a piece of furniture, not just in the visual sense but in a physical way as well. ?It adds wit and an elegant humour to a piece."

LINLEY's hidden drawers and secret compartments are best illustrated in our Collector's Pieces and Architectural Boxes and their ingenious and inventive design is often born from a collaboration between the designer and the craftsman. Examples can also be found in some of the furniture collections available in our shops and are often included in private bespoke commissions. Explore some of the examples that we have online or alternatively come in to either of the shops and a member of the LINLEY team will happily show you some examples.

LINLEY Charity of the Year 2010

LINLEY Charity of the Year 2010

Message from David Linley:

In 2008, my great friend and business partner Ruth Kennedy and her husband Bruce Dundas suffered the terrible loss of their son Louis Dundas who was only 5 years old. Louis died of a brain tumour. During his illness his family became acutely aware of the need to do more to promote and improve children's palliative care. Crucially, their experience highlighted to them the lack of research in the field and the desperate need to share knowledge within the UK and world wide.

To that end they have set about founding the Louis Dundas Centre at Great Ormond Street, with the aim of raising £7 million to create a world-class centre of research. This will be a teaching and practice centre in children's palliative care based at Great Ormond Street Hospital together with their academic research partner, the UCL Institute of Child Health.

In order to raise funds for this tremendously worthwhile and meaningful project, our friend Johnny Bergius has made the brave decision to climb the challenging mountain of Aconcagua later this month. As any of you who know about mountains will testify, this is one of the most difficult ascents there is. Johnny felt this was a fitting tribute to the challenge which Louis faced up to with such fortitude and courage.

I would ask you all to please support Johnny as he attempts this feat, in tribute to a wonderful child and to many other children who will benefit from his endeavours. Please see http://www.justgiving.com/johnny-bergius0/ and also http://www.johnnybergiusaconcagua.blogspot.com.

We will keep you informed throughout 2010 of activity we are planning at LINLEY to raise funds for the Louis Dundas Centre at GOSH on this page.

Yours ever,
David Linley

Chairman
LINLEY

“David Linley has brought a fresh, ageless attitude to furniture and accessories and living in our time. He is already a classic”. BILL BLASS

David Linley founded his business in 1985 with the aim of designing and manufacturing furniture of the highest quality. Some 25 years on, the now well established British design company LINLEY enjoys prominence as both a retail and bespoke business specializing in the design and production of furniture, upholstery, interiors, lighting and accessories of a superlative quality. The focus of the company over the next five years will be on the international expansion of the brand with particular emphasis on bespoke design and gifts and accessories collections.

LINLEY’s products are currently sold through their two London shops (LINLEY Belgravia and LINLEY Mayfair).
Gifts and accessories are also sold online.

David Linley trained at Parnham House, The School for Craftsmen in Wood. On leaving he set up a cabinet-making business and opened the first LINLEY shop on the New Kings Road in 1985. At the time of its opening, Sir Roy Strong (then Director of the V&A) commented that ‘David Linley’s furniture will become the antiques of the future’. In 1993, the shop moved to new premises at 60 Pimlico Road, Belgravia an area renowned for antiques and fine furniture. The second LINLEY shop opened in Autumn 2005 at 46 Albemarle Street, Mayfair, London W1, off Old Bond Street.

Over the years, LINLEY has built up both a national and international presence with a quarter of its customer base from overseas. Bespoke commissions have ranged from individual domestic pieces such as dining tables, games tables and jewellery boxes to entire interior design projects including private residences such as an apartment within Norman Foster’s Chesa Futura building in St Moritz. Commercial projects have included suites at Claridge’s and the Kempinski Baltschug in Moscow, the complete refurbishment of the restaurant at The Goring Hotel and also the Sloane Club Restaurant in London. LINLEY has also made furniture for yachts, (Lady Moura, Savannah and Phocea), private jets and worked on corporate projects for businesses including Credite Suisse, Polygram and EMI. Clients include Oprah Winfrey, Carolina Herrera, Jo Malone, David Tang and many exceptional designers such as Peter Marino, David Easton, Kelly Hoppen, Joanna Wood and Nina Campbell.

LINLEY has become known for its imaginative use of wood in the design of furniture, using a balance of traditional and modern techniques to achieve the best possible result whether for an individual piece or an entire room. Woods used range from the more traditional walnut and sycamore to bold and exotic Macassar ebony. The company, which has grown to epitomize quintessential British style, has developed expertise in working in a variety of disciplines and is skilled in the use of metal work, glass, leather and other materials used in interior design projects.

LINLEY are proud to announce the release of David Linley’s latest book Star Pieces.

This book is the first to take a subject that has previously been represented in dry histories onto a new and spectacular level, in which furniture’s ‘star pieces’, whether made in the distant past or in the 21st century, are seen in an entirely fresh light.

Whether an antique of great provenance or a sculptural piece of design-art, this is furniture that is timeless in its arresting beauty and which connects us directly to the maker. The book’s rich and varied illustrations include details of materials, both expected and unexpected, fabulous ornamentation and sensually tactile upholstery, as well as a feast of spectacular pieces, both antique and contemporary.

Specially commissioned photography shows how a stimulating mix of furniture brings an interior alive, a parallel to the fashion world where it is chic to blend high street buys with vintage and limited edition pieces.

Both a dazzling survey of iconic furniture throughout the ages and an indispensable guide to commissioning or buying a ‘star piece’ of your own, written by experts on the subject.

"Star Pieces is a celebration of spectacular furniture from throughout the ages and today. I was lucky enough to work with two great connoisseurs - Charles Cator and Helen Chislett - to bring together this substantial work. I hope it will inspire and delight people who, like me, share a passion for beautiful things'. David Linley

LINLEY and Hunters & Frankau create a rare collecting opportunity

British design company LINLEY has joined forces with the UK's leading independent cigar importer, Hunters & Frankau, to create a unique offering for the cigar enthusiast. We have recently launched a series of high end, one off and limited edition humidors containing rare cigars supplied by Hunters & Frankau.

LINLEY has established a reputation for creating beautifully made unique products using woods and inlay in an imaginative, distinctive way. Hunters & Frankau are the exclusive importers of Cuban cigars into the UK, their heritage and involvement with the cigar trade dating back to 1790. Both LINLEY and Hunters & Frankau are experts in their respective fields and the combined knowledge of these two companies has been used to create a rare purchasing opportunity for the true connoisseur. These are special pieces for those who have a true love of accomplished craftsmanship, and for those who are passionate about collecting and enjoying cigars.

El Laguito - the 'Cohiba' Humidor

The first piece in the collection is a one off piece inspired by the Laguito cigar factory, the famous factory on the outskirts of Havana where Cohiba cigars are made (Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos).

The building of Laguito, which was originally the former private home of the Prince of Pinar del Rio, has been translated by LINLEY into an architectural box which serves as a humidor for storing a rare collection of Cohiba cigars assembled by Hunters & Frankau.

The LINLEY humidor is made from sycamore with inlays of ripple sycamore, bird’s eye maple, burr oak, holly and Indian ebony. Intricate marquetry detailing, architectural mouldings and lippings are used in the decorative relief of the front and side elevations, and the building sits resplendently atop a recreation of the famous Laguito front steps, (where cigars are traditionally enjoyed). The lid of the box is flat, to mirror that of the Laguito building, and is decorated with quarter matched ripple sycamore and a marquetry emblem of the Cohiba cigar brand.

Skyline Humidor

The second humidor in the LINLEY Hunters & Frankau Collection is called Skyline and is made in a limited edition of five. This humidor features the panoramic skyline of London in marquetry detailing around the box. Landmarks of London depicted include the Millennium Wheel, the Barbican, the Swiss Re Building (sometimes known as ‘The Gherkin’), St Pauls’ Cathedral and the Millennium Dome.

The New York Skyline Humidor features the panorama of New York depicted in an array of indigenous American woods including Louisiana swamp ash, bird’s eye maple, American black walnut and American brown and white oak. Zebrano wood is used to evoke the sky.

Partagas Humidor

The Partagas Factory in Cuba is one of the most recognisable buildings in Havana situated right at the very heart of the city behind the Capitol building. It is in this building that Partagas cigars have been made since the factory was founded in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagas.

The LINLEY architectural humidor is based on this iconic building and contains 100 cigars from the ‘Partagas Serie D’ Limited edition. The box itself is constructed in sycamore, with cherry mouldings and lippings and marquetry detailing in walnut, sycamore and ebony. The interior is lined with Spanish cedarwood and contains a 'CigarSpa' humidification system. The box also contains secret drawers and compartments hidden within the structure.

The Cuban Flag Humidor

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution LINLEY has created a limited edition series of Cuban Flag Humidors. In a series of 50, this is a ‘must-have’ for enthusiasts of Cuban cigars. The box features marquetry inlay depicting the Cuban national flag and is distinguished by an undulating ‘ripple’ effect on the surface which evokes a flag fluttering in the wind.

In 1999 David Linley and his team of designers and makers decided to celebrate the Millenium with a masterpiece of design and craftsmanship. Several subjects were discussed for this but the final decision was made to make a bureau/bookcase based on Blenheim Palace, the home of the Duke of Marlborough.

This unique piece of furniture can be seen in Blenheim Palace. One of the greatest examples of English Baroque architecture and designed by Sir John Vanburgh and Nicholas Hawksmoor the Palace lends itself perfectly to David Linley’s classically inspired furniture.

The Blenheim Bureau stands nearly nine feet tall and over five feet wide. Constructed in beautiful French polished mahogany and flame mahogany veneers the Bureau is beautifully decorated with gilded ormolu and carving and incorporates many of the outstanding features which make David Linley’s furniture unique.
