Constructed in the finest quality mahogany and ebony with veneers of flame mahogany, and French Polished to the very highest finish. This desk is both extraordinarily beautiful and functional.
The writing surface of finest black leather is overlooked by a gallery composed of drawers, pigeonholes and compartments constructed in the same proportions and style of the Arch. In the centre of the gallery is a hinged compartment on the front of which is a Latin inscription in marquetry depicting the virtues of Septimius Severus and his son.
The strongest feature of this desk is the carved ebony frieze. This is composed of seventeen feet of solid ebony, beautifully carved by the most skilled craftsmen in Britain. The carving in bas-relief depicts scenes of architecture, people and horses faithfully reproduced from the original Arch. The detail achieved in this frieze is breathtaking!
The design also featured seven Roman coins minted during the reign of Septimius Severus, set into the desk. The six drawer handles in the pedestals each have a silver denarius set within. The seventh coin, a bronze sestersius, was concealed within the desk; the location only be revealed to the eventual owner.
