Trafalgar Cabinet

A triumphal cabinet that pays homage to Admiral Lord Nelson's life and achievements.

Details

The cabinet draws inspiration from an eclectic mix of sources including the elegance and fine detailing of the Regency period; the ingenuity of David Roentgen's furniture designs; and naval and nautical iconography.

This piece stands over 2.2m high (over 7ft) and is constructed in American walnut with inlays of figured American walnut, Macassar ebony, brass, burr elm and satinwood.

Features include turned brass urns, carved and gilded Corinthian capitals, fluted and gilded columns and legs, carved and gilded dolphins, and a labyrinth of secret compartments and drawers.

The construction and design of this intricate piece of work included the employment of both traditional and modern techniques such as hand-cut dovetailing on the drawer joints; hand-carved and gilded detailing; ingenious engineering operating the various secret drawers and compartments and laser-cut marquetry and laser etched detailing.
